LISPWhat is Lisp?

A lisp is a speech pattern where the /s/ and /z/ sounds are mispronounced, often by substituting them with a distorted /th/ sound. This issue typically arises from improper tongue placement. In many cases, individuals may push their tongue forward instead of pulling it back when producing these sounds. There are several types of lisps, including:

  • Lateral Lisp: This occurs when air escapes from the sides of the tongue as the /s/ and /z/ sounds are produced.
  • Frontal Lisp: The most common form of lisp, where the tongue protrudes forward instead of being positioned towards the back of the mouth to create the /s/ and /z/ sounds.
  • Palatal Lisp: In this type, the tongue is pressed upward towards the roof of the mouth, rather than protruding forward.
  • Dental Lisp: Similar to the frontal lisp, but instead of the tongue pushing between the teeth, it presses against the back of the teeth.

LISP CAUSESWhat are the causes?

The cause of a lisp can vary, and in many instances, the exact reason is unclear. However, some potential factors that may contribute to the development of a lisp include:

  • Dental Issues: The alignment and positioning of a person’s teeth can impact their ability to correctly produce sounds like /s/ and /z/. Correcting dental problems may help resolve the lisp.
  • Developmental Factors: During speech development, some individuals may naturally have difficulty producing certain sounds. Children, in particular, may experience a lisp as part of their typical language learning process.
  • Structural Abnormalities: Physical differences in the mouth, jaw, or tongue, such as a cleft palate or tongue size, may contribute to the production of a lisp.

In many cases, however, no physical or developmental issues are involved. The lisp may have formed due to habitual speech patterns or difficulty distinguishing between sounds like /th/ and /s/ and /z/.

LISP TREATMENTHow Speak Easy Mobile Therapy treats it?

The treatment for a lisp varies depending on the type and severity of the lisp. Common treatment methods include:

  • Visualization: Using a mirror can help individuals visually track their tongue placement and understand how to produce the correct sounds.
  • Drill/Practice: A speech-language pathologist will provide targeted practice words with /s/ and /z/ sounds placed in different positions (beginning, middle, and end) within the word.
  • Sentence Practice: After mastering the sounds at the word level, the next step is practicing them within sentences. The individual will work on reading or repeating sentences that contain multiple /s/ and /z/ sounds.
  • Reading Aloud: To further reinforce the correct pronunciation, individuals may read books or texts aloud, focusing on /s/ and /z/ sounds.
  • Conversational Speech: The final phase involves using the sounds correctly in spontaneous speech, both in familiar and unfamiliar settings, such as casual conversations with friends or strangers.

The length of treatment depends on the type of lisp and the progress made in these stages.
