Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides financial assistance to individuals who are disabled, blind, or over 65 with limited income and resources. While SSI can be a lifeline, the application and approval process is often confusing and difficult to navigate alone.
Magnolia Disability Law helps clients in Baton Rouge and throughout Louisiana apply for SSI benefits and fight back against unfair denials.
Applying for SSI
Applying for SSI requires detailed financial and medical information. Unlike SSDI, SSI is based on financial need, so the Social Security Administration (SSA) will evaluate both your disability and your income and assets.
When you apply, SSA looks at:
- Your medical condition and limitations
- Your income and financial resources
- Your living situation
- Your ability to work
Many applications are denied due to missing documentation or financial eligibility issues. We help ensure your claim is accurate, complete, and properly supported from the beginning.

Denied SSI Benefits?
Reconsideration
(First Appeal)
The first step after a denial is reconsideration. A new claims examiner will review your application and any additional evidence submitted.
We will:
- Identify the reason for your denial
- Submit updated medical and financial documentation
- Strengthen your claim to address weaknesses
You typically have 60 days to file this appeal.
Administrative Hearing
(Second Appeal)
If reconsideration is denied, your next step is a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). This is one of the most important stages in your case.
At the hearing, we will:
- Prepare you for the judge’s questions
- Present medical and financial evidence
- Question vocational or medical experts
- Advocate directly on your behalf
Many SSI claims are approved at this stage with proper preparation.
Appeals Council
(Third Appeal)
If the judge denies your claim, you can request a review by the Appeals Council.
We will:
- Review the judge’s decision for legal errors
- Submit written arguments
- Seek a reversal or a new hearing
If needed, we can continue your case into federal court.
